Parents can be more aggressive about negotiating tuition, room, and board at colleges where their children have been accepted.  There are experts in college planning who can train parents to understand where those savings might be.  Knowing ahead of time the places where colleges can cut costs can be beneficial.  While not exactly like buying a car, having the “collegefax” may be invaluable.
